Romantic period

The Romantic Period A Tone Poem is an orchestral piece in one continous Section or movement in which a non-musical source would have been described, illustrated or portrayed. Examples of non-musical sources are stories, novels, poems, paintings and landscapes. They have no singing and so would be portrayed by using different pitches, rhythms and tempo's. Dissonance is clashy sounds, using notes outside the key so composers could make music sound full of emotion. During the classical period dissonance was not allowed. This was what the romantic period was about, different sounds to earlier music. Virtuoso is a performer that excels in technical ability. Listz wrote pieces of music that only he could play because they were so complicated Programme music is a piece of music for instruments which describes something or tells a story. They described feelings and weren't tangeable Romantic symphony normally lasted about 25 to 40 minutes and they didn't follow strict rules. They also had more than four movements, the orchestras were much bigger with around 70 people and used dissonance. They were more expressions using harmonisation, rhythmis patterns and dynamics. Changes in opera: romantic operas would last 3 hours with 70 plus instruments dominated by the brass instruments. They would portray every drama including death, madness and tragedy.
